Amazon KDP Image Requirements (2026)

KDP does not have one set of image rules — it has three, and they differ on colour space, file type and size limit. Check the column that matches what you are uploading.

The two size limits are often confused. 50 MB is the Kindle eBook cover limit; 650 MB is the limit for print files — both the paperback cover PDF and the manuscript. They are not interchangeable.

KDP Trim Sizes at 300 DPI

The presets come straight from Amazon's trim size list and its bleed formula: page height with bleed is the trim height plus 0.125″ twice, page width is the trim width plus 0.125″ once, because the inner edge is bound and does not bleed.

Why Enlarging Is Not a Fix

Shrinking an image is safe: you are throwing away detail you had, and the result is genuinely sharp at the smaller size. Enlarging is the opposite. There is no extra detail anywhere in the file, so the new pixels are guessed by interpolating between the ones that existed. The picture gets bigger and softer at the same time.

That is why the resize tool refuses to proceed on an enlargement until you tick a box confirming you understand it. It is not there to be annoying — it is there because a 900-pixel-wide photo blown up to 1838 px will pass KDP's automated check and still look disappointing in print.

What the DPI Tag Tool Fixes

This tool rewrites the DPI tag stored inside your image. That tag does not decide whether KDP accepts your file — KDP works out resolution by dividing your pixel count by the printed size. What the tag does decide is the physical size programs like Word, InDesign and Affinity give the image when you place it.

An image tagged 72 DPI drops into a manuscript roughly four times larger than intended, and that oversized placement is what drags the effective resolution below 300. Correcting the tag to 300 makes the image land at its true size, which resolves that whole class of problem.

Important: the tool changes the tag, not the pixels. If your image genuinely lacks pixels — say it is 300×300 px for a full-page cover — no tag will save it and the image has to be recreated larger or reproduced smaller. Work out what you need with: printed inches × 300 = minimum pixels.

How to Check Pixel Dimensions for KDP

For an image printed across the full 6 inches of a 6×9 page you need 6 × 300 = 1,800 px wide; a full-page image needs 9 × 300 = 2,700 px tall. Add bleed and the page grows to 6.125 × 9.25 inches, so a full-bleed image needs 1,838 × 2,775 px. Check your dimensions in Windows (right-click → Properties → Details) or on Mac (Preview → Tools → Inspector).

Frequently Asked Questions

Which of the two tools should I use?

If your image already has the pixels but lands at the wrong size in Word or InDesign, use Set DPI tag: it edits metadata and changes no pixels. If the image is genuinely the wrong size for the page, use Resize pixels. The tabs keep the two apart so you always know which one is about to run.

Does resizing lose quality?

Shrinking is safe and normally looks crisp at the smaller size. Enlarging is not: there is no hidden detail to recover, so the extra pixels are interpolated from the ones that already existed and the result looks softer than the original. The tool will not enlarge anything until you tick a box confirming you understand that.

Do the KDP presets include bleed?

Yes, by default. Amazon asks for 0.125 inches of bleed on the top, bottom and outside edges, which makes the page a quarter inch taller and an eighth of an inch wider than the trim size. You can switch bleed off if your artwork does not run to the edge of the page.

Why do my photos say 72 DPI?

Most cameras and phones write 72 into the file by default, a leftover from a 1984 screen convention. It is not a measure of quality: a 24-megapixel photo tagged 72 DPI still holds all 24 megapixels.

KDP still flags my image after using this tool. What should I do?

Then the image genuinely lacks pixels for the size it is printed at. Multiply the printed width in inches by 300 to see what you need. You can enlarge it here, but that will not add detail, so the better fix is to place it smaller on the page or start from a higher-resolution original.

How many pixels do I need for a 6 by 9 page?
